    Web Browsing Behavior Analysis and Interactive Hypervideo

In order to assist researchers in easily inspecting fine-grained browsing data, current tools usually display user interactions as mouse cursor tracks, a video-like visualization scheme. However, to date, traditional online video inspection has not explored the full capabilities of hypermedia and interactive techniques. In response to this need, we have developed SMT 2ǫ, a Web-based tracking system for analyzing browsing behavior using feature-rich hypervideo visualizations. We compare our system to related work in academia and the industry, showing that ours features unprecedented visualization capabilities. We also show that SMT 2ǫ efficiently captures browsing data and is perceived by users to be both helpful and usable. A series of prediction experiments illustrate that raw cursor data are accessible and can be easily handled, providing evidence that the data can be used to construct and verify research hypotheses.     A high-precision polarimeter

    We have built a polarimeter in order to measure the electron beam polarization in hall C at JLAB. Using a superconducting solenoid to drive the pure-iron target foil into saturation, and a symmetrical setup to detect the Moller electrons in coincidence, we achieve an accuracy of <1%.     An investigation of standard thermodynamic quantities as determined via models of nuclear multifragmentation

    Both simple and sophisticated models are frequently used in an attempt to understand how real nuclei breakup when subjected to large excitation energies, a process known as nuclear multifragmentation. Many of these models assume equilibriumthermodynamics and produce results often interpreted as evidence of a phase transition. This work examines one class of models and employs standard thermodynamical procedure to explore the possible existence and nature of a phase transition.     Liquid-gas phase transition in nuclei in the relativistic Thomas-Fermi theory

    The equation of state (EOS) of finite nuclei is constructed in the relativistic Thomas-Fermi theory using the non-linear σωρ\sigma-\omega -\rho model. The caloric curves are calculated by confining the nuclei in the freeze-out volume taken to be a sphere of size about 4 to 8 times the normal nuclear volume. The results obtained from the relativistic theory are not significantly different from those obtained earlier in a non-relativistic framework. The nature of the EOS and the peaked structure of the specific heat CvC_v obtained from the caloric curves show clear signals of a liquid-gas phase transition in finite nuclei. The temperature evolution of the Gibbs potential and the entropy at constant pressure indicate that the characteristics of the transition are not too different from the first-order one.Comment: RevTex file(19 pages) and 12 psfiles for fugures.     Weak evidence of bright light effects on human LH and FSH

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Most mammals are seasonal breeders whose gonads grow to anticipate reproduction in the spring and summer. As day length increases, secretion increases for two gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This response is largely controlled by light. Light effects on gonadotropins are mediated through effects on the suprachiasmatic nucleus and responses of the circadian system. There is some evidence that seasonal breeding in humans is regulated by similar mechanisms, and that light stimulates LH secretion, but primate responses seem complex.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To gain further information on effects of bright light on LH and FSH secretion in humans, we analyzed urine samples collected in three experiments conducted for other goals. First, volunteers ages 18-30 years and 60-75 commenced an ultra-short 90-min sleep-wake cycle, during which they were exposed to 3000 lux light for 3 hours at balanced times of day, repeated for 3 days. Urine samples were assayed to explore any LH phase response curve. Second, depressed participants 60-79 years of age were treated with bright light or dim placebo light for 28 days, with measurements of urinary LH and FSH before and after treatment. Third, women of ages 20-45 years with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) were treated to one 3-hour exposure of morning light, measuring LH and FSH in urine before and after the treatments.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two of the three studies showed significant increases in LH after light treatment, and FSH also tended to increase, but there were no significant contrasts with parallel placebo treatments and no significant time-of-day treatment effects.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results gave some support for the hypothesis that bright light may augment LH secretion. Longer-duration studies may be needed to clarify the effects of light on human LH and FSH.</p

    Designing a Locally Manufacturable Wheelchair for Nepal

    People with disabilities in developing countries often lack the basic equipment needed to assist them in their daily lives. International Nepal Fellowship (INF) is a Christian medical organization located in Nepal that provides medical care and assistance to people with disabilities and other conditions. Currently, INF imports expensive wheelchairs that undergo a prolonged border process before being received. INF has reached out to the Collaboratory to design a wheelchair that can withstand the challenges of Nepal’s terrain and can be manufactured from local materials. The Nepal Wheelchair team has set out to design a wheelchair that can fulfill their needs. In previous work, the team researched wheelchair designs and took a trip to Nepal. From this trip, more information was gained, an initial prototype was constructed, and locally available materials and parts from Nepal were brought back. This year, as a result of knowledge gained through constructing the second prototype, many design changes were tested and implemented. The team researched standards and created testing procedures to ensure the changes to the rear wheel mount, caster wheel mount, footrest, and seat design would uphold the strength and durability of the wheelchair. These design changes have enhanced patient safety and experience in the wheelchair while still keeping the design easily manufacturable. The team also researched options for adding push rims and through using a roller bender were able to construct them. Moving forward, the team will continue to finalize manufacturing documentation and take a second trip to Nepal this May.     Effect of Flow on Caloric Curve for Finite Nuclei

    In a finite temperature Thomas-Fermi theory, we construct caloric curves for finite nuclei enclosed in a freeze-out volume few times the normal nuclear volume, with and without inclusion of flow. Without flow, the caloric curve indicates a smooth liquid-gas phase transition whereas with flow, the transition may be very sharp. We discuss these results in the context of two recent experiments, one for heavy symmetric system (Au + Au at 600A MeV) and the other for highly asymmetric system (Au + C at 1A GeV) where different behaviours in the caloric curves are seen.Comment: 11 pages revtex; 4 figs; version to appear in Phys.     User geospatial context for music recommendation in microblogs

    Music information retrieval and music recommendation are seeing a paradigm shift towards methods that incorporate user context aspects. However, structured experiments on a standardized music dataset to investigate the effects of do-ing so are scarce. In this paper, we compare performance of various combinations of collaborative filtering and geospatial as well as cultural user models for the task of music recom-mendation. To this end, we propose a geospatial model that uses GPS coordinates and a cultural model that uses seman-tic locations (continent, country, and state of the user). We conduct experiments on a novel standardized music collec-tion, the “Million Musical Tweets Dataset ” of listing events extracted from microblogs. Overall, we find that modeling listeners ’ location via Gaussian mixture models and comput-ing similarities from these outperforms both cultural user models and collaborative filtering.     Microcanonical studies concerning the recent experimental evaluations of the nuclear caloric curve

    The microcanonical multifragmentation model from [Al. H. Raduta and Ad. R. Raduta, Phys. Rev. C 55, 1344 (1997); 56, 2059 (1997); 59, 323 (1999)] is refined and improved by taking into account the experimental discrete levels for fragments with A6A \le 6 and by including the stage of sequential decay of the primary excited fragments. The caloric curve is reevaluated and the heat capacity at constant volume curve is represented as a function of excitation energy and temperature. The sequence of equilibrated sources formed in the reactions studied by the ALADIN group (197^{197}Au+197^{197}Au at 600, 800 and 1000 MeV/nucleon bombarding energy) is deduced by fitting simultaneously the model predicted mean multiplicity of intermediate mass fragments (MIMFM_{IMF}) and charge asymmetry of the two largest fragments (a12a_{12}) versus bound charge (ZboundZ_{bound}) on the corresponding experimental data. The Nepal Wheelchair team accepted this challenge and set out to design a wheelchair that can fulfill their needs. The team began by researching wheelchair models for inspiration and eventually settled on two preliminary designs. In January 2020, the team traveled to Pokhara, Nepal to gain feedback from the staff at INF and select a final design based on their comments. During this trip, the team acquired and brought back locally available materials and parts available in Nepal in order to construct a prototype. This year, prototyping has been completed for the following elements: the central frame, wheel lock, footrest, wheel mounting assemblies and armrest fixtures. As a result of knowledge gained during prototyping, some design changes to the wheelchair have been made.
